Do We Have An Obigation To Use Our Talents/gifts…? Is It Ok Just To Ignore Them And Do Stuff We Want To Do?
i’ve studied in physics, and done some teaching and stuff like this, and i could go a long way doing something productive… but i think i’d rather follow more selfish dreams - snowboard instruction qualifications, running chalets in the mountains, stuff like this… it just seems to me that there’s a lot more quality of life if we go and do stuff we want to do, instead of doing stuff we can do and is deemed responsible/acceptable but don’t actually want to be doing…
is this wrong, or do i ‘owe it to the world’ to go and teach, or do some clever bit of research or something…?
i just want to play…

i think it’s very good to follow your heart and do what you like to do. and hey, who said that physics things are much more productive than snowboard/mountains things? both are your talents (not only physics) and if you really like one more than another, then do really well in it, it’ll be awesome and i guess it’ll be more successful because it involves love. (maybe my answer is a bit less objective because personally i really love the things you prefer - the snowboards and the mountains, they sound really relaxing and peaceful

Are you kidding me? I have a lot of talents that are not being “used” and wouldn’t know where to start to get paid for it. I can write, I am a semi-skilled artist. I feel guilty sometimes that I have been given natural talents that people go to school for to learn. But they are the one’s getting paid and I’m not. The worst thing about not being able to use your talents to make money: you feel like a loser.

I think we should use our talents better than dping activities just for the sake of money and social status. IT’s better to be middle class and fully happy, than to be very rich and unhappy and incomplete.

Well you said it yourself . You’ll follow your talent no matter what . Doing what you like is actually following your talents . Realizing what your talents are is another thing . You say you studied physics , therefore you consider that you talent lies there . Yet you said that you’re a passionate mountaineer , you love winter sports , you care about alpine nature and you definitely love anything that has to do with mountains . That’s obviously your talent , not physics . There are few people so in love with mountains , and you should really consider yourself lucky to be one of them . So go ahead , follow your real talent and do all the things you love !

There’s a saying that goes, “The secret of happiness isn’t ‘doing what one likes’, but ‘liking what one has to do.’”
I have always been artistic/creative and so I pursued an education and a career in this field over the past 20 years. I believed I could always rely on my gift/talent to get me through life.
But during my divorce three years ago, I suffered a stroke which has robbed me of this skill and now I can hardly write my own name. I’m too scared to try to even draw again.
So my advice to you is to make the most of what you have and don’t waste your life simply pursuing sensory pleasures. Try to have fun doing what you feel is right. If you believe that you will find long lasting satisfaction snow-boarding, then do it. But please don’t waste your life by keep changing your mind from what appeals to you one moment to another. Be focussed and do the best you can at whatever your conscious tell you. There are few things more nobler than teaching. I think either way, you will be around people and providing a service to others. Just make your decision and have no regrets. Good Luck.

Well, you can play an intelligent game of balance. Your job is what you do for a living, life is much bigger than that, and starts only after your jobs done. So go, play.:)

I think that someone who’s really gifted for something (I mean really gifted), would never ask this question. I believe the gift is something that just can not be ignored… not using it makes you uncomplete. I guess that intelligent people have this common problem of not knowing what to do with themselves unless they are really talented for something. I think it was Hegel who said something like this: “Necessity is lack of freedom only if it’s not understood.” Try to replace some words to mach your question and then think about it once again
But what you are actually asking here is should you enjoy your life or should you be productive. Why do you mix that with the question of talents?
