How Does One Purchase An In-cabin International Plane Ticket For Small Dog To Fly With Them?
I plan on going to Catania, Sicily (Italy) from Washington, D.C. on December 13th and returning January 11th with United & Lufthansa. The flight leaves D.C. with United and then goes to Rome, Italy. The connecting flight after that and the entire return trip is all with Lufthansa.
Do I have to purchase my dog’s ticket with United, Lufthansa, or both and would it be a flat rate for the entire trip or would I need to buy him a ticket for each stop that is made to switch planes? Anyone have an estimate on how much this will cost since the dog is only ~ 5 lbs and hopefully in-cabin with me? Thanks!

Having recently relocated from Milan to NYC I can advise that there are very few airlines that now allow pets onboard between the two countries. KLM and Air France both allow you to take pets onboard, but must be able to fit in a specific travel bag that can go underneath the seat in front of you. Plus, these two airlines restrict the number of pets that are allowed in cabin. Alitalia take pets but in the cargo hold. Given connecting flights are needed I would be careful on the stress that placing pets in the cargo will have on your love one, especially if the breed is flat nose like my two pugs.
Also note that you will need to ensure that your pet has his/her required travelling documentations and all vacinations are up to date. Our kids have Pet Passports for Europe which allow travel within Europe. To acquire you need to get specific blood test at least 6 months prior to departure, so if you don’t already have this start getting them arranged.
ps. My partner is from Sicily, and December is a lovely time there, cold but very nice
