You definitely don’t want to get a junk Walmart bike (although I did get the $145 Schwinn Varsity from Walmart and rode it 4,000 miles before I sold it for $300 to some guy–not a bad bike if you’re not terribly concerned about quality). My suggestion is to check out PerformanceBike.com. They regularly have sales of 15-20% off bikes, and sometimes free shipping. They also have a number of stores around the country, so if you can get a price online and visit the store they will honor it and save you on shipping. I just paid $425 for a Scattante Roma–a very fast commuter bike–and have put about 600 miles on it out here in Baghdad, Iraq. You could easily get a nice road bike for under $500.

Save another $500 and buy an entry level Trek, Scott or Felt. Specialized and Giant have nice entry level bikes as well. I wouldn’t buy anyting less than a Shimano Sora gruppo….Shimano 105 would be ideal.
You will regret settling for a department store bike once you ride an actual road bike. Heavy, poorly made frames and terrible gears/shifters…..and I mean TERRIBLE!
You can also buy used off eBay or Craig’s List as well. Someone is always looking to upgrade and sell their current bike at a discount.
