Pierre Du Gua de Monts, first colonist in Canada is probably born around 1560 in the castle of Mons (Royan, France), from a noble family.
He participated in the Religious wars on the protestant side (with Henri de Navarre, protestant chief who will soon become the next King of France: Henri IV).
Du Gua de Monts is a calvinist. He married Judith Chesnel (catholic from a noble family).
In1599, he sells almost everything he owns and invests in trade
In 1603, Henri IV sends him as a “Lieutenant général” in northern America
In 1604, he leads an expedition to Canada, with Samuel de Champlain as map drawer (Jean de Poutrincourt was in the expedition, too).
He settles a first colony in 1604 in the island of Sainte-Croix. The terrible winter which followed drove him to a new settlement (august 1605): Port-Royal. He had the trading monopole of furs until Henri IV had to take it away because of the other settlers complaints (1607).
The last year of his monopole, Champlain invested all his money in an audacious enterprise on the Saint-Laurent’s River, which would result in the founding of Québec, in 1608. After Henri IV’s murder (1610), Pierre du Gua renounces to his situation in Canada in 1612.
He dies in 1628 in France (castle of Ardenne, Fléac-sur-Seugne)
